Creating the perfect brand for your soap business

Craft businesses have rapidly increased in numbers over recent years, with consumers opting for handmade and artisan products over the mass produced equivalent. With this ever increasing competition, you need to take steps to make sure that your handmade soap remains the best - all 'bar' none!

1. Logo

It can be less daunting and easier to create a logo first, and your brand and other marketing materials should flow from this easier. There are a few different ways you can go about creating a logo.

The most professional and simple way to create a logo is to hire a graphic designer to create you a bespoke one - but beware this is going to cost you!

If you don't have that kind of resources then there are more cost effective ways of getting around this. Shutterstock has a range of logos available to download that might be relevant - you might need to play around with the color and text to make it right for you.

Just remember that your logo should reflect you and what you want your brand to convey. If you are a natural, handmade company, then there are certain colors, words and images that will convey this is in a blatant and appealing way to the consumer.

After your logo has been created, you can think about the rest of the visual brand - this part is fun! Color schemes, fonts and styles that will be laid out for all to see across your packaging and marketing communications.

When  choosing colors, it's important to think about the meaning of the color and how this is portrayed to your consumer. The handy infographic below shows how different brands have utilized colors to convey their brand message effectively.

Once you've picked a color, look at a color scheme generator such as Coolors to inspire you to find the rest of your palette.

3. Packaging

Once you have your branding complete, you'll need to think about how you are going to package your soap - this should reflect your brand messaging. For example, if you use natural materials in your soap making process, then use natural or recycled materials in your packaging.
